Laapataa Ladies beats SRK’s Pathaan, Prabhas’s Salaar at Japan box office

The success of Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies isn’t limited to India. The film, which recently released in Japan, is doing a fabulous business there. As per the latest trade report, the rural comedy-drama has surpassed the lifetime earnings of Pathaan and Salaar: Part I – Ceasefire in Japan, making it one of the most successful Hindi movies of all time there.
The highest-grossing film in Japan continues to be SS Rajamouli’s RRR, which starred Ram Charan and Jr NTR in the lead. However, the success of Laapataa Ladies in Japan is noteworthy, considering the film is already campaigning for its Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Film category.
Directed by Kiran Rao, the film collected 50 million yen – over Rs 2.75+ crore gross – in 45 days at the Japanese ticket window. The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer minted approximately 50 million yen, while the Prabhas-starrer earned around 46 million yen during their run in Japan, reported the trade website Sacnilk.
The total worldwide collection of Laapataa Ladies is around Rs 31 crore gross, out of which Rs 25 crore gross came from India alone. The film has enjoyed a decent run at the box office in India, and the Japan figures suggest a successful run there as well.
The film can beat Baahubali: The Beginning and Bajrangi Bhaijaan in the coming days. The Rajamouli-directorial earned around 75 million yen, while the Salman Khan-starrer did a business of 80 million yen in Japan upon its release. RRR remains on top with a business of 2.40 billion yen, around Rs 130 crore gross in Japan.
Laapataa Ladies is about two brides who get inadvertently exchanged at a railway station. How that leads to misadventures, comedy and certain life lessons on the way, makes the film one of the most swift screen experiences of our time.
